PPIA

Background. In commemoration of 100 years of Hari Kebangkitan Nasional (Indonesian National Awakening Day) that referred to the historical event in 1908 and 10 years of Reformation in Indonesia that saw the resignation of Soeharto after thirty two years of his presidency, Indonesian Student Association of Australia (National Board) in collaboration with Victorian Branch and its sub-branches, hosted by Victorian University, are conducting the PPIA 2008Conference , titled: "The Voice of Indonesian Future Leaders".

This conference will be the collaboration of Indonesian students from eight universities in Victoria State (University of Melbourne , Deakin University, Swinburne University, Holmes Institute, Monash University, Victoria University, RMIT University, and La Trobe University) that reach across the different education strata – short course, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate – from various study fields.

The Conference will be organized as both an academic and social gathering, which involves a wide pool of people sharing their interests in Indonesia. This Conference aims to encourage constructive discussions that can contribute to valuable inputs of the way forward, not only for Indonesia, but also to the Indonesia - Australia bilateral relations.

This event is held with a wide-ranging participation and support from a large number of Indonesian students in Australia. The main student organization, PPIA (Indonesian Student Association of Australia) – a forum of more than 18,000 Indonesian students in Australia – has been most actively involved in the preparation of this Conference.

Against the background of various levels of education and interdisciplinary scholarship, this Conference holds a conviction that it can open up a broader pool of fresh and constructive ideas that have become increasingly rare in today’s Indonesia. At the heart of it, this Conference is meant to give life to the underlying spirit: a truly reformed Indonesia is possible, as long as there are enough people willing to do something about it. Through this event, Indonesian students in Australia wish to present their work, thoughts, and hopes for a better Indonesia post-reformasi.
